929 tire size question...help!

It's been awhile, so I don't remember the answer to this...

The 929 came stock with a 190/50 rear tire. I remember that a 180/55 will fit, but what about a 190/55? In the deep recesses of my memory, I seem to recall that a 190/55 will rub the front of the swingarm. These are Dunlop Q2s if that matters.

Reason for asking, I qualified for a set of free Q2s from nesba, but they don't have 190/50, only 190/55 and 180/55.

    Thanks!

But since I don't have one, anyone else remember?

No idea if a 190/55 will fit or not. I always ran the 180/55 over the 190/50 when I had my 929. It felt like it turned easier with the 180. Just my 2 cents.

Probably doesn't help but 190/55 fits on the 04 1000RR

It will fit, depending on where your axle is sitting in the adjusters. Since the '55 is taller (104.5mm sidewall for the 190, vs. the 99mm sidewall height of the 180), it will need a little more space to remain clear of the apex of the swingarm. I always ran a 180 on my 929, though, never found myself wanting for more traction on the street. On the track, the bigger contact patch of the 190 comes in handy while driving off corners.... Racers are *always* looking for more traction on the track.... :)

Echoing everyone else, but the Pirelli Superbike slicks don't even come in a 50.. only 55. It isn't all width. It's a ratio with height and width, but I'm sure you'll be fine.

It is 2/10s closer according to their site than a 50. I seem to recall though that the tire that rubbed was a slick and I am thinking a 60. Wasn't it on LTLs bike? Abtech should remember...

His bike has a 195/65 on it (dunlop) and obviously it doesn't rub. Not sure if any material was removed off the swingarm, but I doubt it.

Oh no.. on the RC. Like sheep said though.. it's like 2 tenths difference. I did have a 190 on my 98' cbr 900rr. I can't remember if it was a 55 or 50 but whatever it was it wasn't close to rubbing on anything.

I had a 16.5" rear on my 929 when I started messing around with big marshmellow tires.

The 190 was pretty new back then, most of us ran 180s on the 17" wheel.

Pm baketech, it was his bike that required the belt sander. If memory serves me right it was a racetech tire he fitted. It was fine in the paddock but at speed it rubbed when it expanded. But this was way back I'm maybe 04 or so, and tire tech has evolved greatly since then. If nothing else call steve brubaker at Dunlop and ask him his opinion. Or I can call Tom tomorrow.

It's the Dunlop 190/70/17 which is a lot taller than the 55 but unless you have at least 5/8" of clearance after it's mounted and trued you'll need a belt sander . . .

HG2, the 929's came stock with a 190/55, not 190/50. It's the only size I've been running on my bike for 10 years now (whoa...my bike is old).

I run a 190/55 on both my street and track tires and there's plenty of clearance to my swingarm. I have noticed that my rear fender is slowly being worn through but I think it's an aftermarket fender and it only happens at the track. And my bike is a 954, I don't know if they're the same as a 929.

bike is so old you forget the stock size. service manual and owners manual both say 190/50.

I was gonna say I had a 190/55 Pirelli Dragon on mine then I remembered I have a 954 swingarm.

Thanks guys, I'll go out and look at the bike, and see how much clearance is there with the 190/50, and know that the 190/55 will be about 10mm taller (is that about right)? Then from there, see if I've got that 5/8" clearance. If not, I'll ask for the 180.

Edit: If I'd gone out to the garage and looked at my bike, I'd have answered my own question! I also have the nws hugger on, which extends down in front of the swingarm. I barely, if even, can get a finger in between the tire and the hugger. 180/55 it is!
