CBR1000RR Stator Failure

    Add me to the list of Fireblade stator victims.

    I started noticing some problems about 6 weeks ago with the bike playing games at startup; slow to start when cold but fired up fine once it had been ridden a while. I blamed it on a battery that was almost 3 years old. I tried to charge the battery and since it wouldn't hold, I just swapped out the battery for a new one last week without doing any real troubleshooting.

    Take the bike out today, since it 60 degrees yet again. Stop in the welding shop to order my new MIG welder :D, pay up, get back on the bike and have to bump start it to get home.

    Just finished the troubleshooting and I'm now a statistic. I wish I had done the troubleshooting before Christmas, then I could have asked Santa for one and not had to shell out another couple hundred bucks.

    The lesson here is: Even when you are sure you have the whole problem figured out, finish the troubleshooting process and make sure there aren't other issues at hand. I could have knocked all this work out at once and been done with it.

    Damn that sucks Seamus.. How many miles you got on the bike? I have just under 19k on mine right now and no issues as of yet. But I also have 3 years worth of warranty left too.

    I'm right behind you. Just under 18k on it. Didn't "waste" money on the longer warranty. Other than the speedo recall, this is the only break on the bike that wasn't caused by me. Although it does fit in. Nothing on the right side of the bike has ever been broken or even scratched.

    Maybe the year and a half on the autobahn had something to do with the failure. :dunno:

    so are you saying now that you wish you would have gotten the extended warranty? For me even if it doesn't ever break I like the piece of mind for alot of the parts that are covered just in case. I won't own the bike that long most likely anyway.

    Well seamus, you are still ahead of the game. The warranty would cost twice what the stator will cost.

    I cancelled my extended warranty after Honda did NOT cover something they should have covered.

    I took a chance on Honda's well-earned reputation for reliability.

    That's basically what I was thinking when I got the bike. Anything significant ($$) that would go wrong, would happen in the first year. April will mark 3 years and this is the first break not specifically caused by me.

    Old girl will be up and running by next weekend. :thumb:

    Stator arrived yesterday. Got up this morning and swapped them out. (Had a function to go to this afternoon, hence the Cavalry Soldier and Trusty Steed avatar :D)

    So can you identify what's wrong with my old stator from the pics?

    That would appear to be a design or OEM equipment failure. I know the money you had to spend probably isn't worth it, but I would call someone and bitch them out nonetheless.

    So you're saying it doesn't look right? :dunno:

    I thought it seemed odd that one tower (I don't know what they're really called) was completely fried and the others were fine.

    There's a sticky at 1000.net about the stator. Lot's of info other there, if you are so inclined.

    Speedo was for early '04 models. It reads 20% SLOWER than you are going. Even if you bought it new, your dealer may have already done the swap. It is on file at Honda. Go to a dealer give them your VIN and they can check.

    I think you would know by now if you had a bad one.


    EDIT: Changed 10mph to 20%. See BELOW. I love this editing the past, thing. It's like being a congressman.

    I found the sticky shortly after I started this thread. I haven't added my VIN to the website tracking but I'm getting around to it soon.

    The speedo failure wasn't just 10mph slower, it was a 20% difference. Mine failed while I was in Germany. I couldn't figure out why 120kph felt like I was flying all of a sudden. Fortunately, I had already committed the speed=rpm to memory and realized something was wrong. (With stock gearing, 120kph is about 5000rpm).

    I stumbled over the TSB by accident just perusing the internet for parts and stuff for my bike.

    I guess I will have to buy one for back-up or sell the bike after my next two track days. That would stink to have it crap-out during sessions.

    The stator or the speedo?

    I put in a new battery and rode for 60 miles before I noticed anything was still wrong. When I first noticed something was wrong, I was 40+ miles from home and made it all the way with no issues. And that's with lights and stuff hooked up and running.
