They sell special "diabetic" socks at most places with a good selection. They are made of a very soft material that is specifically created to not cause blisters. I use them when backpacking sometimes.

FWIW my trackday/extended riding socks are a pair of technical ski boot socks that are very thin and have merino wool around the toes and heel. Basically they are exactly what Bobcat is describing.

I actually have some of the diabetic ones. All I could find one day and I needed white socks. The upper part is also a real open weave. I might try those vs smart wools next time I go two days (only doing one race day this weekend if I can get caught up)

I own a pair of Sidi Vertigo Air and Alpinestars Supertech Rs. I personally found the Supertech Rs to be much wider than my Vertigo Airs. No idea if they changed it up (width that is) when Sidi went to the Vortice line, however.

That was my impression also. I could go narrower but not a lot thus my concern. I did find someone with a 44 that let me try it and it fit but the boot was VERY thoroughly worn in. The Sidi's do have a wider calf though which is an issue for me with my AStars in leathers (OK for street use as my riding pants go over the boot)

Smart wool socks rock! I think they even cured my old blisters...

Tried some Sidi's on that were the correct size and broke in. Not a chance, even completely broke in they were snug enough that they likely would not have worked. Still 100% sold on the Smart Wool socks though. But then smart and wool all in one name how could you go wrong.
