I'm not sure that's true. The US version of the RC30 had less than 100 rwhp, and if I recall correctly, the 45 had just 10 or 12 more. It took quite a bit to get those into race trim - kit carbs, ignition boxes, wheels, exhaust, brakes, suspension, bodywork, etc etc. Plus a lot of weight reduction. A stock one wouldn't have been competitive in any sense.

The Aprilia may be closer to race ready than anything we've seen, but I have to think there's a couple hundred thousand dollars that separate it from the real WSBK thing, which is the reason for the exercise.

More power and more ways to use it via electronics, I guess. I can't believe Honda would homologate anything for a series they've essentially backed away from, leaving Ten Kate as their surrogate factory bike. Even if they wanted to beat the European bikes that are dominating the series, they'd probably stick with the I4, wouldn't you think?

the HRC CBR600RR had all the HRC kit parts but for some reason came with unfinished street bodywork (no paint or lights but had the cutouts). and you could get it in the US. Rising Sun Cycles had one on their site but I can't remember if they said it was in the US or if they just had to ship it from Japan.

What are you basing this statement on?

The BMW engine has more firepower than the CBR1000RR by a longshot, it's not even close. It's got more horsepower, more refinement, better materials and construction and better electronics. It is a beautifully constructed engine that sets the open class series production bike standard according to any tuner that's looked inside or outside.

I've ridden both and it doesn't take much to feel the difference, evl_twn sold a very nicely built pro CBR1000 in favor of his BMW.

There's a guy who carries the flag for the '45 with every post on the RC30 group.

    He says:
    Honda RC30 1988-1992...
    > 115 races 16 wins 2 championships .14% starts to wins percentile...
    Honda RC45 1993 to 1999...
    > 172 races 33 wins 1 championship .19% start to win percentile..

A number of other people say:

    RC30..
    2 championships over 4 years
    50% of contested championships won

    RC45..
    1 championship in 6 years
17% of contested championships won. (whew! it was zero for quite a while))

    Lies, damned lies, and statistics.

But it wasn't the most successful bike they ever campaigned, and more to the point, it hardly resembled the one that sat unsold at the Honda dealership on Telegraph Road near 59 for 5 years.

You've been reading way too many of Larry's posts, I recognize those from this week on the email list. He sure has faith in the 45, but what's funny is now he also has an RC30.

Personally, I prefer the 30 over the 45, but I like them both enough to probably never consider selling them unless I can't ride them anymore. The 30 is a racebike with lights, the 45 feels a lot more polished and more of a production bike, even though they didn't make a whole lot of them. They both get the close ratio trans, aluminum tank, and lots of other odd bits, but the 45 bodywork is all plastic.

I like the stock paint on the 30, but I'll still take a 45. :)

As I remember, the 45 was a really hard bike to get handling right on raceday, but that power was not really at issue.

For instance, mine doesn't really do 180 mph. Those look like the stock brake disks, though!!

I would love for this bike to not only exist, but also depart from Honda's norm of offering a neutered "special" (like the 30 and 45), and it be on par with the Aprilia and BMW, if not better. If they actually prove me wrong and grow a sack, I will be a Honda customer once again.
That said, I'm quite positive I won't be needing to sign any papers at a Honda dealer any time soon.

The biggest problem about the RC45 story is that except for the basic package, every RC45 that was succesfully campaigned at the National or World level was actually an RVF750 (TT1) which was very different from the production version (RC45). We are talking more than 100 pound weight difference, 40 HP difference (than the maimed AMA RC45 that Miguel and Mike Hale originally ran) and huge geometry differences. I have ridden both and they are completely/totally/incredibly different.

As a street bike, Jamie has a point. The hp advantage of the BMW isn't realized until over 11000RPM. Anywhere below that, the CBR ('08+, not an 06 like like EVL's old bike) is substantially stronger.

$30K for the RC. I somehow doubt that one is going to be ridden.
