    NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 11V108000

    Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR

The regulator / rectifier assemblies with the following Suzuki part numbers are being recalled on the motorcycles mentioned: 32800-41F11, 32800-15H10, 32800-05H11, 32800-41G10, 32800-15H00, 32800-18H00, 32800-05G10, 32800-10G10, 32800-05H20, OR 32800-06G01.

Suzuki says some regulator / rectifier assemblies were produced with insufficient adhesion between the power module (circuit board) and the rectifier case that contains a heat sink to dissipate heat.

Due to the insufficient adhesion, heat generated on the power module circuit board can cause the circuit board to deform, and lift off the case.

This condition causes excessive heat on the circuit board and uncontrolled electric current output which can result in insufficient charging current being provided to the motorcycle battery.

This can cause the discharge of the Suzuki motorcycle's battery, which can lead to stalling or a non-start condition; if the motorcycle's engine stalls, it could increase the risk of a crash.

Suzuki will notify owners and Suzuki distributors will replace the effected part with an improved part free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on March 2. Ownwers may contact Suzuki at 1-714-996-7040.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit safercar.gov.
  2. gt702 Oh the memories

I'm sure a lot of VFR owners are not going to like hearing this. If I remember, this was one of the hot regulator swaps a few years back to get away from the Honda (older ones) units.
  3. motomender New Member

Yes, Suzuki recalls 75K bikes for a long standing charging system issue and it's the Honda owners that are going to be upset. wat? The R/R swap to honda from Suzuki hasn't been relevant since 99 and before. the aftermarket stators and R/R's available widely are FAR superior to the OEM Suzuki parts, and they're cheaper.. and you don't have to wait two months to get one. Yeah, huge trouble for the Honda riders.
  4. jamiedaugherty That boy sure is a runnin' fool

A Suz quality problem doesn't surprise me at all, it's the fact they are claiming to have sold 73k+ units in the past three years!
  5. gt702 Oh the memories

Kind of a tongue in cheek comment. Remember that those with a recall get the part for free. Those who converted wire harnesses to use something non-standard don't.

Agree on the newer Honda regulators (I'll go Honda and not aftermarket on these, thank you) being far superior with the built in cooling than either the earlier Honda or Suzuki parts.

That Suzuki is standing up and recalling them is a very positive thing.

The 73K might be world wide sales, not just in the US. I didn't see mention if this was a worldwide or US only recall.

No one said they sold them, only that they are recalling them, if these are all US units, I imagine there is a lot of Dealer stock in there.... last i heard Suzuki had an incredible number of New stock across the USA pre 2011 Model years.

It is also my experience Suzuki makes some of the highest quality bikes out there...

Agreed. They definitely make the Top 4 list for quality. I'd only put Honda, Kawi, and Yamaha ahead of them out of the Japanese makers.

Based on the GSXR 6 and the SV I've ridden, I'd say they're as good as any of the manufacturers, and have had notably fewer problems than Kawi.

...to say nothing of a certain Italian manufacturer whose bikes are almost universally lusted over until they blow up...

    Flame Suit On....

Ha .... you are funny, if not too bright......

I would Suzuki second on that list, and although they do not meet Honda dependability, they are a bargain by comparism...... Yamaha is close but third, kawasawki is about to be passed by Aprillia for 4th and they are Italian for goodness sakes....

but hey, 7000 posts in less than 4 years.... it is obvious you are not driving much besides your keyboard, so how could you tell....... having put over 100,000 kms on Suzuki bikes over the same period I would have to disagree with your assessment....

Not much time to ride when you're raising a family, finishing med school and in residency/indentured servitude, Gryph. Rest assured he rides really well, knows his way around a wrench (to say nothing of a wench) and is far brighter than the average wiseass.

FWIW, I've owned Hondas, Yamahas, and now a Suzuki. They've all been comparable with regards to fit/finish/reliabilty. I will tell you the Suzuki is way easier to work on than any Honda I've owned. Honda enjoys putting their bodywork together using a dozen different size fasteners. In fact, it's one of the reasons why I chose the gixxer over the Honda 600RR to convert to track-only; it was much easier to remove all the non-track needed items.

I've owned Suzukis, Kawasakis, Yamahas, Hondas, Vespas, Montesas, Jawas, Sanglas, Riejus, Puigs, Ducatis (a 50cc one), and I'm sure I forget something. I paid for an Aprilia but only got to ride it for about 1000 miles, so even though I paid for it, I don't consider I own it.
I've got two Hondas and one Yamaha in the garage right now, and the SXV still at the shop. IMO, Hondas are much better than the other brands when it comes to reliability, generally speaking.
When it comes to service after the sale, they're all the same. We don't call them stealerships for nothing.

Edit: Oh, yeah, I owned a Mobilette scooter too. I migth still be forgeting something...

I'm admittedly biased given the fact that there are three Honda bikes and a Honda Ody in the garage. The only other bike I've ever owned was also a Honda. Among the family though we've had a couple other Hondas, a Kawi KDX, Yamaha FZR, 2 GSX-Rs, a baby Ninja, and probably a couple others.
