I figured I should quit hijacking threads with my VFR questions so I'm going to start consolidating here.

Thanks for the write up Dave. I've been fairly up to date on the differing tech in the VFR through the years just wasn't sure which years were the exact cut-off for each gen. I was 11 when a 1990 VFR was built so those years aren't as familiar to me. I've been fairly up to date with the gen V an gen VI bikes since that was HS and beyond. I've also read a lot of the "gen VI isn't a 'real' VFR discussion." I'm not sold on the 'gimmicky' stuff either but...I do really like the styling, especially with those matched hard bags.

I probably am not discriminating enough to where it would really matter to me but as the years have gone on I've really bought into the "gear driven cam V4 kool-aid" and would like to put one in my garage. I don't think it's even an "if" it's a "when."

I've almost sold my '95 a couple of times and decided against it. She's bone-stock and just turned 9k miles on Weds.

Very comfortable, extremely smooth throttle response, and the gear driven cams sound awesome.

If you find one, you won't be disappointed. :thumb:

This is the "admission" that started all of this.

Back when it was for sale I gave it some thought a few times.

They are great bikes with a good following of people...:thumb:

Imho, a lot of the negatives you read on the internet come from folks that have even ridden, much less owned one...:twocents:

Fwiw, the same divisive crapola got spewed out about the Fifth Gen bikes when they were released... If I had listened to it, I would have missed out on a lot of great Sport Touring on my *inferior* machine....:crap:

Here is a good source for VFR info past and present...

From the Gen 3 suspension upgrade thread
As we frequently demonstrate, the vifferisti agree on nothing, and seize every opportunity to argue pointlessly about minutiae in order to better ignore the faint but persistent smell of wee. BTW, I'll soon be sporting an Autocom with FRS/GMRS bike-to bike so we can continue to argue while we ride. :D

The same magazines that awarded the VFR the best motorcycle in the world for 10 years straight 1990-2000 (and not once since) were the ones that suggested the '95-'97 Gen 4 models were the best performers, based on their lower weight and a slight HP bump.

There was an increase in weight that came with the side rads and linked brakes of the '98-'00 Gen 5, offset with another 50cc's.

Sure - and some people have probably been able to put more ecstatic miles on their Buell Blasts than I have on my VFR in the last few years. That doesn't mean I'd buy one. :googly:

To each their own. If someone has invested their cash and their heart in a Gen6, more power to them. (Though more power hasn't been forthcoming from mother Honda..) If the motorcycle press has gone gaga over them, it has escaped my attention. There are a lot of bikes in the classification now that didn't exist before, so they don't always win the ST shootouts anymore, much less the BOTY. Doesn't mean they're not capable or reliable mounts.

The point of my upgrade thread was that the older ones are so good, they're worth the money to upgrade, particularly if they've become old friends. I have found they do have a character of their own, which is ironic since the rap on them at the time was that they were so competent that they resembled appliances rather than motorcycles.

If I were going to buy my first VFR right now, I'd get a clean Gen 5 for less than half the price of a new VTEC. There are still a lot of current upgrades available as well as parts.

The older ones cost less and represent a great value, with one caveat. There are far fewer parts and upgrades available on the current aftermarket. They are getting like vintage bikes in that respect, though they are far more usable than most in that category.
  8. gt702 Oh the memories

As noted, there has been a lot of crap ... sibling rivalry ... over the generations, but they are all good in their own way. Each has a character and people seem to align with some more than others. I put 55k miles on my first '94, rode a '98 (800) for about 20k, and sold it to get another '94 (so far adding ~20k to the 36k on the clocks when I bought it). I like the character and the fit of the '94 better.

Besides the engine one of the big changes in '94 was the seating position, and that to me was a big killer (also prefer the character of the 750 engine, but that is just me). The 800's sit up more and have pegs that are lower and further forward which works well with the guys who were putting bar risers on. I like the sportier and more involved seating postion on the 750's.

To me, get what fits you physically and emotionally best. All are very capable. Good luck in your hunt.

I have looked outside of the VFR circle but there isn't an Aprilia dealer anywhere in Des Moines, there might not be one in Iowa. No BMW dealer here either.

One of my local dealers has a Triumph Sprint with matched hardbags right now that looks very nice. Out of my price range though, as I'm sure any Futura would be.

The problem is that I'm not seeing clean Gen V's for half the price of the Gen VI's. They are holding their value extremely well it seems. As I search Craigslist and VFRD the Gen V's are still going for a lot of money.

As you may remember my CBR didn't have a single upgrade other than SS lines. Upgrades really aren't a big deal to me. However, the one thing that I would like is upgraded suspension and your thread showed me that it is possible and not expensive.

This just in, new higher res photo's of the current bike of the moment. I'm really hoping that the eBay auction doesn't get the job done for this bike because he's close enough to go deal with and the ad is on Craigslist as well. I don't have enough time to get my ducks in a row to be bidding on eBay for it. For me the real draw on this bike is the color and left exit exhaust.

If you do get to deal with him in person, check under that tank bra.

I'd be willing to be that there's some paint wear under there caused by the bra or maybe the aftermarket seat. Not a big deal and it's a great looking bike, but it may be an extra negotiating point for you.

It's on my to do list if I do decide to make a move on this thing. It's only 5 hours away.

There is an identical one for sale in NJ but it doesn't have the left side exhaust.

I spent two weeks working with a plastic surgeon. I'm an expert at spotting fakery.

Sweet, a VFR thread. Hope you can pick one up slickwill. Might have seen my giddy post at VFRD but I've been looking for one ever since a rental overseas. The rental place had a variety of makes but I made a reservation for the VFR to "see what this legendary bike is all about". After the four day rental, now I know. Casually kept my eye out for a mint well maintained one. Since bringing an '01 5th Gen home two months ago I'm still besides myself. Have some sweet rides in the barn here, but scales have been dropped from the eyeballs as I get a kick out of this thing.
