I bought the Honda flywheel removal tool for my XR650R. Can I wedge a block of wood between the case and the crankshaft to hold things from turning or do I have to get the flywheel holder thingy that looks like one of the giant strap style oil filter wrenches.

The block of wood should work fine. You don't have to get crazy when loosening up the rotor from the crank, just turn the bolt in as far as it will go, tap the end of it with a hammer, repeat as necessary.

Hopefully I don't have to do that too soon. What you got cookin there slick? Did you buy some parts or just tearing down farther?

You hold the center of the puller where those two flats are.

Those flats are on the flywheel. They are recessed in lower than the outer edge of the flywheel so there isn't a good way to hold them.

Right, it takes a special wrench. I've made one before for a KLR 650 with a big craftsman wrench and a oxy fuel torch to make two 90 degree bends. You can try to hold the flywheel with a strap wrench, heck if you have a pnumatic impact gun, you probably dont dont need anything to take it off. Putting it back on and torquing the bolt, thats a different story. I would not wedge the crank in the case, it might work or you might bend the crank or crack the housing.

Always worked for me, but never done it on a 650.

No luck with impact gun or with the evl method. I dont have a way to make an offset wrench so Ill probably order the factory style wrench. I need to get the flywheel off soon so that I can get the crank to Falicon.

Had another go with the impact gun...this time remembered to up my output pressure to where it was supposed to be. MrsSlick used the compressor to blow up Jr's pool and it was turned way down.

Popped off immediately. Now I just have to have the crank pressed out. I was going to take it to a shop but find myself considering getting my own press.

I kinda was wondering. Also some cheaper impacts won't do it either. It has to spin fast. You can pick up a little press cheap at Harbor Freight.

It's a very nice Craftsman Professional impact. Just user error.
